Critical Thinking

Essential Concepts for Healthy Living, Third Edition concentrates on five key goals to help students learn and practice critical thinking strategies. Throughout the textbook, a critical thinking icon identifies features that focus specifically on critical thinking skills.

Critical thinking encompasses a variety of cognitive skills such as:
· synthesizing,
· analyzing,
· applying, and
· evaluating information.

In the health sciences, using critical thinking skills is necessary to understand and evaluate health information and then apply it to daily life. This book teaches critical thinking skills that help students develop expertise in important cognitive functions, such as:
· distinguishing between verifiable facts and value statements,
· distinguishing relevant information from irrelevant information,
· determining the factual accuracy of health claims, and
· making responsible health-related decisions.

The Five Key Goals of this Text:

Key Goal 1:

Students will understand the most recent scientifically based personal health information.

To think critically, students need a solid foundation in personal health information. That is why Essential Concepts for Healthy Living has been developed from the latest scientific and medical research, relying heavily on primary resources, which are cited in the text. Because understanding health involves understanding science, this text includes basic scientific information that relates to health, presenting it in an easy-to-understand manner.

Key Goal 2:

Students will master textual material through the use of effective pedagogy.

The organization of ideas is an integral part of reading comprehension. In keeping with this idea each chapter in this text contains features such as Key Terms, Diversity in Health Essays, and Chapter Summaries that assist the student in assimilating the content.

Key Goal 3:

Students will think critically about health information published and distributed by various sources.

The focus of education today is not just to give students information, but also to teach them how to acquire and evaluate information. Unlike other personal health textbooks, the critical thinking features discussed below teach students higher-order thinking skills and give them practice in using these skills in every chapter.

Key Goal 4:

Students will apply personal health information to their lives.

Essential Concepts for Healthy Living, Third Edition, encourages students to adopt healthier lifestyles and recommends practical ways to do so.

Key Goal 5:

Students will analyze their own health-related behaviors and attitudes and change them to improve health and maintain well-being.

Applying Concepts for Healthy Living: A Critical ThinkingWorkbook contains features that address self-assessment and changing health habits. Together, these help students assess their behaviors and attitudes, and provide a mechanism that will help students change health-related behaviors if they choose.
